Graphic designers make good Web designers, as you'll see when you visit the 1800MYLOGO.com web site. The logo and identity firm includes three graphic designers and a photographer who've developed a Web site with great layout and an easy-to-follow interface.

The site's ample white space and new age design showcase the firm's talent. Each page's length requires no more than four scrolls down - following the accepted Web rule of thumb that keeps visitors from getting lost on a page. The designers also helped their audience find relevant information within the site by keeping most pages within two clicks of the home page. The links to each section are clear and in the same place on every page, which makes finding what you are looking for a snap. Although bulky photographs don't cluttered the site, large graphics slow download times.

1-800-MYLOGO uses its site to educate visitors on all facets of creating an identity or logo. Visitors learn, for instance, that "The logo or slogan has to be simple and short, yet very easy for even the sub-conscious mind to remember." The company also uses a soft sell approach to pitch their services. Visitors discover that 1-800-MYLOGO can work within any budget and find specific prices for individual services. The site also showcases the firm's work with sections dedicated to customers' logos and jingles. Although 1-800-MYLOGO's doesn't bog visitors down by trying to display its work on its home page, it should probably follow the pattern of its jingle section and provide an overview page for its display of clients' logos.

Even so, 1-800-MYLOGO never forgets that the main benefit of a Web site is developing sales leads. To that end, its site has detailed information about its services as well as an online questionnaire. The company contacts prospects that fill out the questionnaire and starts work as soon as it receives a 50 percent deposit for a project. 1-800-MYLOGO even reinforces its company identity by using the company name as its URL.

"In the past month since the site has launched I have gotten 3 sales with no advertising other than Web links from complementary sites," said founder David Tartamella. Obviously a properly designed web site can pay off.
