American Federation of Musicians selects
1800MyLogo to create logo design for new initiative

July 3rd, 2002 – The American Federation of Musicians chose 1-800-MyLogo, Inc. to design a logo for their international forum named “International Orchestral Network”. This will be the first international forum for union officers and orchestral musicians interested in symphony, opera and ballet, to discuss issues of mutual curiosity and concern. It will begin with a forum for international union officers, and expand as the information grows and people become comfortable with the style of communication and shared information.

The American Federation of Musicians (AFM) is the largest union in the world representing the interests of professional musicians with its beginnings dating as far as 1800’s. The AFM’s main goals are to secure control over the music industry and labor markets, bargain contracts and collective agreements in order to improve wages and working conditions for its members, build political power to ensure that musicians’ voices are heard at every level of government, build coalitions and act in solidarity with other organizations who share their concern for social and economic justice. An example of a strong coalition is that with the International Federation of Musicians, which was founded in 1948 and is now counting 65 unions throughout the world.

An essential goal of the forum “International Orchestral Network” is to bring together musicians from all over the world, and the logo design should clearly convey this. Our graphic designers envisioned the image of an abstract globe, representing the multinational aspect of the forum, as well as symbols directly related to music, delicately represented, so that the logo design suggests what the organization is about. The logo has to be appealing to the members of the forum, as well as to be suggestive for non-members, people who appreciate the value of music in their lives. As the AFM’s representative mentioned, “the forum will make appropriate efforts to make good music a common property of all people”.

Clearly identified by our designers, the forum needs to appear professional, conservative by tradition, and yet contemporary by the tools they are using in order to address to their members. For our talented graphic designers this will imply the creation of a design which combines both traditional and modern aspects, together with the internationality of the project.

About American Federation of Musicians
In the mid-1800s musicians in the United States began exploring ways to improve their professional lives. They formed Mutual Aid Societies to provide members with loans, financial assistance during illness or extended unemployment and death benefits. A number of these organizations became early unions serving various constituencies, but problems arose between them due to competition. In 1896, delegates from these organizations gathered at the invitation of American Federation of Labor (AFL) President Samuel Gompers to organize and charter a musicians' trade union. A majority of the delegates voted to form the American Federation of Musicians (AFM), representing 3,000 musicians nationally. They resolved: "That any musician who receives pay for his musical services, shall be considered a professional musician." Within its first ten years, the AFM expanded to serve both the United States and Canada, organized 424 Locals, and represented 45,000 musicians throughout North America.
