University of Pittsburgh Chooses 1800MyLogo To Create Logo for Faculty. February 27th, 2001 - The University of Pittsburgh has enlisted the services of corporate identity firm 1800MyLogo Inc. to design a unique logo for their Faculty of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering. This is a first for the University as they do not have any "department-level" logos and have been using the University logo for all applications. The Faculty of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh is highly regarded, not only in terms of an educational body but also as a trusted and reputable research and development team within this specialized field of engineering. The University felt it was necessary for the Faculty to have its own identifier, different than the University logo, with the intention of promoting a strong sense of community among the students and professional members of the department and in addition, the logo will present a clear visual signature or identity synonymous with success and high standards which are two qualities that this department holds in esteem. On a more general level, the new identity will improve staff, student and public perceptions of the department and of the University as well. The Chemical and Petroleum department of the University of Pittsburgh wants to develop an identity that will be easily recognized and that will place their faculty above and apart from the rest of the other schools which offer comparable programs and which are competing for the same students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The logo must exude that "university" feel yet with less concentration on the city of Pittsburgh. In addition this identity should also promote the idea that chemical engineering is more "process oriented" rather than chemistry related. 1800MyLogo has had the opportunity
to have worked on several similar projects, and in an effort to improve their own
understanding of the issues that govern successful identity solutions for institutions of
higher learning they have assembled a team of corporate identity focus experts who work
alongside the graphic artists to allow for the most accurate interpretation of the
client's design needs. It is up to this expert team to translate each school's and each
faculty's unique qualities and message into a logo that perfectly reflects and encompasses
the latter. Effective marketing and brand awareness are significant factors that regulate the success and growth of any industry. As competition from Canadian and other international universities increases, there is a real need for American Universities and Colleges to increase their "brand" awareness and many have in the last decade made it a priority to go full force in establishing new methods to promote themselves and their faculties. Other projects which the 1800MyLogo team has recently completed include work for the Engineering Department of Pacific University located in Stockton, California and the development of various identities for several faculties of the University of Colorado at Denver.
